Glastonbury

Audio Description
Description
This is a large acrylic painting on stretched canvas. The canvas measures 60 cm tall by 80 cm wide or 2 foot tall by 2 foot 8 inches wide.. This landscape depicts the iconic Glastonbury Tor (or mound) with its tower in the foreground rising majestically against the backdrop of the Somerset Levels, its ancient silhouette standing in striking contrast against the serene, flat landscape. The levels were reclaimed from the marshy sea by a Dutch water engineer in the 17th century prior to which time the tor was an island. The terracing on the tor was created in Neolithic times around the same time as Stonehenge in Wiltshire was constructed. The 'basin' of the Somerset Levels creates temperature inversions with atmospheric skies as depicted and traps mists above which the tor and tower can be seen. The tor is thought to have been the Island of Avalon to which King Arthur retreated after battle and to have been visited by Jesus as a boy accompanying his tin miner uncle on a visit to Britain. It is also said to have been visited by Joseph of Arimathea after Jesus' crucifixion. The composition captures the rich history and mystical aura of the region, blending natural beauty with a sense of timeless significance which I hope is captured in this artwork.

Corfe Castle

Audio Description
Description
This is a large acrylic painting on stretched canvas. The canvas measures 60 cm tall by 80 cm wide or 2 foot tall by 2 foot 8 inches wide.. This atmospheric acrylic painting on stretched canvas portrays the evocative ruins of Corfe Castle in Dorset, bathed in shades of purple and pink. Corfe Castle was built by William the Conqueror shortly after the Norman invasion of 1066 to subdue the local Saxons and to guard the route to Normandy across the English Channel. It has acted as a home to the very unpopular King John I and his son and a prison for their political rivals. Later, during the Civil War it withstood two sieges by the Roundheads before an Act of Parliament was passed and it was destroyed using gunpowder. It stands as a testament to British history and this particular image I think is very evocative blending romance and ruin, inviting reflection on the passage of time and the enduring power of place.
