Kelp Forest
This abstract acrylic painting on stretched canvas depicts an underwater scene where seaweed floats gently in the green-blue sea. Layered textures convey the penetrating sunlight and graceful movement of the marine plants, while the cool, aquatic colour palette evokes the serene, immersive world beneath the waves. This artwork was created using the alcohol technique whereby alcohol is dripped into watery acrylic paint to create 'cells'. This was repeated several times and coloured glazes applied to create an 'underwater depth', and then the algae were created by dripping and blowing a brown acrylic paint. A video showing the creation of this artwork is available here. This simple yet atmospheric artwork will look good in many settings bringing a bit of underwater mystery - as if viewed through a window.

Sunlight on Water
Sunlight on Water
This abstract acrylic painting on stretched canvas captures the dynamic play of sunshine on the surface of water. With detailing and shimmering highlights, the composition evokes the ever-changing movement of light as it dances across the water’s surface, creating a sense of energy, and natural beauty. The initial stages of this artwork were created using the plastic wrap technique whereby crinkled plastic film is impressed into watery acrylic paint. This was repeated several times with different blue/green hues to produce a complex background. The various shapes formed were then emphasised using acrylic markers and the reflected white pattern of the sunlight painted. A video is available demonstrating the various stages is available here. This approach to creating art inspires a subject en route and in this case I wanted to celebrate the organic shapes of sunlight playing on the surface of water.

This was done a number of times with various blue hues to create a complex seascape (as seen from above). The 'rolling wave' was then elaborated in acrylic pens.

In Wave: Imagined, a complex, swirling red wave takes centre stage on stretched canvas, its dynamic form rendered in intricate detail using rich acrylic paint. This artwork started life using the alcohol technique (which creates 'cells') and the plastic wrap technique (which creates 'veins') when alcohol and plastic are used on watery acrylic paint respectively. This image then suggested itself to me.

This piece was created for a solo 2024 exhibition 'A Sense of Place' inspired by the southwest of England. A rock pool complete with sea anenome, starfish, sea urchin and seaweed is depicted in this abstract acrylic painting on a wood panel. This artwork was created using the alcohol technique whereby alcohol is sprinkled into watery acrylic paint to create 'cells'. The outcome of this initial process suggested this subject to me. Memories of childhood visits to the beaches and 'fishing' with a little net were brought to mind. Detailing and rich textures bring the underwater scene to life, while the abstract style infuses the composition with energy and wonder, celebrating the hidden beauty of coastal marine ecosystems.

The artworks listed below are all from The Square Foot Shop section of the Gallery. These are all 12 x 12 in (30 x 30 cm) stretched canvases that are priced at a very affordable £100 which includes postage and packaging within the UK. In addition, the canvases are small and light and incur modest additional costs to ship overseas. Please contact me for a country-specific quote.
