The Green Vase
The Green Vase
This abstract acrylic painting on stretched canvas depicts a resplendent imaginary still life arranged in a mottled green vase. This artwork was created firstly using the alcohol technique which involves dripping alcohol into watery acrylic paint to create 'cells'. Thereafter another wash of watery acrylic paint has crumpled plastic film impressed into it and the outcome suggested the still life you see to me. More details can be found in this video. This fantastical still life riffs off of natural forms creating new possible flora - all arranged to dramatic effect in a green vase on a table. Soft pink, peach, purple and blue hues are offset against green foliage. The bold, expressive use of colour and form creates a dynamic composition, where the vase and its contents seem to come alive with energy, inviting the viewer to interpret the vibrant interplay between the abstract elements. This piece could, I think, comfortably be displayed alongside more traditional artwork and could take pride of place above a fireplace or similar.

Scattered Sprigs
This delicate and subtly-coloured acrylic abstract on stretched canvas depicts scattered pink and purple rose buds and their green foliage blending gently across a grey background. The composition evokes a sense of fragility and quiet beauty, with each bud appearing as a fleeting moment in nature, inviting contemplation of the understated elegance of organic forms. This piece was produced using a technique whereby alcohol is sprinkled into a watery acrylic wash to produce 'cells' over a vibrantly coloured ground. The interesting effects produced are then preserved using masking fluid to create the 'rose buds' and a pale grey wash applied prior to removal of the masking medium. This collage on stretched canvas features a colourful imaginary floral and foliage arrangement in a bowl set against a deep blue background. A video of its creation can be found here. This picture was produced using a combination of the alcohol technique whereby alcohol is sprinkled into watery acrylic paint creating 'cells' and the plastic film technique where creased plastic film is impressed into watery acrylic creating interesting 'veins'. This picture started life with a combination of the plastic film and the alcohol techniques whereby crumpled plastic is impressed into, and alcohol is sprinkled onto wet paint respectively.
