Corfe Castle
This atmospheric acrylic painting on stretched canvas portrays the evocative ruins of Corfe Castle in Dorset, bathed in shades of purple and pink. This was one of a number of pieces produced for a 2024 solo exhibition entitled 'A Sense of Place' relating to my adopted home in the southwest of England. Corfe Castle was built by William the Conqueror shortly after the Norman invasion of 1066 to subdue the local Saxons and to guard the route to Normandy across the English Channel. It has acted as a home to the very unpopular King John I and his son and a prison for their political rivals. Later, during the Civil War it withstood two sieges by the Roundheads before an Act of Parliament was passed and it was destroyed using gunpowder. It stands as a testament to British history and this particular image I think is very evocative blending romance and ruin, inviting reflection on the passage of time and the enduring power of place.
